Women’s History Month Spotlight: Kristi Blackwell

Women’s History Month Spotlight: Kristi Blackwell

In what ways does being a woman influence you in your work?

I am able to bring a different viewpoint to the table – different viewpoints help lead to creative and innovative ideas and solutions. Others in the profession do treat women differently.  Rather than let that get me down, it lights a fire under me and drives me to be better.  Those experiences also make it that much more important to champion other women in the profession.

How have your life experiences as a woman guided your decision to pursue a career in the legal field?  Did any women positively impact your decision?

A prominent female legal figure I admired before heading into law school was now-retired Supreme Court justice Sandra Day O’Connor. Justice O’Connor had to work her way up in a time when it was extremely difficult to enter the legal profession as a woman. She ultimately became the first woman to hold a position on the U.S. Supreme Court. My favorite quote from her is: “Do the best you can in every task, no matter how unimportant it may seem at the time.”

What female mentors have inspired or influenced you and in what ways?

Mina Miserlis, my dear friend of 12 years, is one of the best and brightest attorneys I know and has imparted a wealth of knowledge to me over the years. She has been an amazing support in my personal and professional life. Mina has also had a positive impact on many others as well, as she is so generous with her time and willing to help when needed.

Do you think it is important for women in this industry to prioritize supporting other women? How do you show your support for other women?

Yes! I do this by celebrating other women’s successes, mentoring women new to the law, and encouraging women to pursue leadership opportunities in the firm.

Do you have any advice for women just starting out in their legal careers?

Jump at opportunities to do new and different things. Get to know your leaders – show up to in person events. Find a way to distinguish yourself and become an expert at something

What drew you to Tyson & Mendes?

Once I interviewed with Bob Tyson and Pat Mendes, I knew this would be a great place to work! They have been incredible mentors to me and are immensely supportive of women in the legal profession.

What is a fun fact about you that most people do not know?

I am a die-hard sports fan with allegiances to the Utah Jazz, San Diego Padres, and San Francisco 49ers.
