Tyson & Mendes Launches “Attorneys in Residence” Program to Elevate Skills for the Firm’s Newest Associates: 30 Attorneys Attend Inaugural Three-Day Training

San Diego, Calif. (Nov. 28, 2023) – National insurance and civil litigation defense firm Tyson & Mendes LLP has successfully launched its Attorneys in Residence (TM AIR) training program for new hires starting their legal careers. TM AIR is a cohort-based training program, tailored for the firm’s defense attorneys early in their careers and designed to elevate their growth and development.  The immersive training program is unmatched in the insurance defense industry and demonstrates Tyson & Mendes’ commitment to its attorneys’ professional development and delivering outstanding results for its clients.

The inaugural event, a three-day series driven by practical application and immediate feedback and guidance from experienced trial attorneys, was held virtually Nov. 15-17. Tyson & Mendes will host future programs for the firm’s junior attorneys in-person at the firm’s headquarters in San Diego on a trimester basis throughout 2024.

The firm designed the unique series, which included workshops on managing workload, developing winning case strategy and cultivating meaningful client relationships, to bridge the gaps between what is taught in law school and what is needed to excel in legal practice.

“TM AIR is a game-changer for ensuring our attorneys are equipped to handle clients’ cases with precision and thoroughness,” said Sitar Bhatt, Managing Partner in Tyson & Mendes’ Arizona and Washington offices and chair of the firm’s Young Professionals Group. “The program provides attorneys with the essential tools and knowledge needed to strategically defend and settle cases. This commitment to detail instills confidence in our clients, knowing their cases are being managed with the highest standards Tyson & Mendes upholds.”

“As a TM AIR small group facilitator, I found immense value in the program’s dedicated time for hands-on practice and robust discussions,” said Candice Hamant, Partner in Tyson & Mendes’ Northern California office. “TM AIR provides our new attorneys with a platform to learn and immediately apply essential case handling skills. Many of us learn by doing, and this program creates an environment for exactly that – a safe space where newer attorneys can develop their skills while building their confidence. It’s a great value-add for people working at this firm.”

The program also included sessions led by licensed clinical psychologist Dr. Jennifer Staples, who guided participants in exercises focused on how to live their values, practice mindfulness, manage stress and overcome burnout.

The cohort model was adopted to support the firm’s “Productivity First” remote work environment. The majority of Tyson & Mendes’ more than 200 attorneys work primarily from remote work locations, offering the flexibility many attorneys seek. The cohort model works to bridge the gap between colleagues often created by a remote work environment by building camaraderie and community across the firm. After the initial TM AIR training, attorneys continue their development as a cohort through ongoing learning opportunities that carry them well beyond their early days with Tyson & Mendes.  The firm’s continued education opportunities are aimed at cultivating attorney growth, competence and confidence throughout their careers.
