SAN DIEGO (Feb. 28, 2019) – Tyson & Mendes LLP announced today that Partner James Sell has been named its fourth equity partner – joining Founding Partners Robert Tyson and Patrick Mendes as well as Mina Miserlis as stakeholders in the growing civil defense firm.

Currently the managing partner of Tyson & Mendes’ Northern California office where he leads a multi-attorney litigation team, Sell is a skilled trial attorney with a long history of success in all types of jury trials. With extensive experience in construction, public works, products liability, catastrophic injury, wrongful death and professional liability litigation, he also serves as “general counsel” to a number of Bay Area contractors, subcontractors and suppliers – handling a full scope of construction matters and disputes.

Prior to joining Tyson & Mendes in 2016, Sell tried a case in partnership with firm leaders, obtaining a verdict of $26,000 – less than one percent of the plaintiff’s demand – in a personal injury matter in which the plaintiff sought more than $30 million in damages. Sell later joined Tyson in a case in which plaintiff’s counsel sought $6 million. Ultimately, the jury returned a verdict of only $389,000 and found the plaintiff forty percent at fault.

Sell has practiced law in the Bay Area for more than 30 years. Previously, he was president/shareholder at Parton Sell Rhodes and a partner at Lynch, Gilardi and Grummer.

Sell earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in history from St. Mary’s College of California and his J.D. from Golden Gate University, where he served on the trial advocacy team.

A Judge Pro Tem and Discovery Facilitator in the Marin County Superior Court, Sell also serves on the St. Mary’s College Rugby Alumni Board.
