Thank you for attending our Annual Spring Webinar Series! We had a great time in this four-part series and we hope you did too! Here’s a recap of our favorite top lessons from each of these sessions:
First, Partner Mark Shanberg and Northwest Regional Managing Partner Mike Drews taught us how to “Build” a Winning Strategy to Handle Construction Cases in 2024.
Key takeaways:
- Personalizing the corporate defendant and giving a number go a long way in construction cases, especially when plaintiffs are going out of their way to villainize the general contractor.
- Investigating risk transference, using themes of common sense and reasonability, and accepting responsibility are key. Can we build it? Yes, we can!
Next, Partners Susan Oliver, Danielle Pascale, and Nashville Managing Partner Bill Johnson tackled Sexual Abuse and Molestation: Coast to Coast Strategies for Difficult Cases.
Key takeaways:
- Statute of limitations eliminations and expansions continued to wreak havoc for SAM cases.
- Effective motions strategy and collaboration across the defense bar are crucial!
- Accept responsibility to shift responsibility to the actual perpetrators, and argue pain and suffering, since noneconomic damages will always form the bulk of the award in these cases. Get creative, proactive, and collaborative to achieve better results.
In a special collaboration with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, Strategic Managing Partner Bob Tyson and Partner & Head of Communications Ashley Paige Fetyko Pulled Back the Curtain of Nuclear Verdicts®: the Who, What, Where, Why, and How.
Oriana Senatore, Senior Vice President of Research at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Institute for Legal Reform joined us to reveal key new insights from the ILR’s most recent paper!
Key takeaways:
- Macro solutions such as tort reform and regulation of litigation funding would be effective tools to mitigate the risk of Nuclear Verdicts®.
- But micro solutions exist to address what is happening in courtrooms across the country where these outsized awards are delivered. The trio talked solutions at every level, offering some hope for those who want to take back justice – for all!
Finally, we closed out the series with a crowd favorite – our Annual California Law Update, led by California Regional Managing Partner Kristi Blackwell and San Diego Managing Partner Dan Fallon.
This duo brought the fun AND the education with their review of some of California’s strangest, most interesting cases from the past twelve months!
Key takeaways:
- An emoji is worth a thousand words (but not enough to win an appeal); bounty hunters abound, and golf is dangerous!
