A Pennsylvania training camp for hopeful Olympic gymnasts will now pay $8 million to settle claims over its hiring of a coach who sexually assaulted a young trainee. The case, Chinea v. Woodward Pennsylvania, LLC, was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Pennsylvania.[i] The allegations and settlement underscore the importance of proper background investigations as an integral part of the successful operation of a modern business.

S.C. and her parents alleged in their federal suit that Nathaniel Singer, a former gymnastics coach at Woodward Gymnastics Camp, assaulted S.C. in 2018 and 2019 when she was merely 14. Allegations central to S.C.’s case included that the camp rehired Singer knowing that he had acted inappropriately with and already sexually abused another trainee in 2017.[ii] Indeed, another lawsuit by a different camp trainee, referred to as S.S., remains pending against the camp in Pennsylvania federal court.[iii] Woodward settled with S.C. and her family for $8 million.
