Jefferson Jay Cheney is Senior Counsel-Thought Leadership, within the Growth & Client Engagement Department of Tyson & Mendes. Mr. Cheney is based in the Denver and San Diego offices but serves all offices across the firm. Mr. Cheney’s practice focuses on external and internal communications, business development, industry and firm growth, and client engagement.

Prior to joining Tyson & Mendes, Mr. Cheney was the twice-elected District Attorney and chief prosecutor for a three-county judicial district in Colorado. As the principal leader of a multi-county judicial district’s prosecutor office, Mr. Cheney managed teams of attorneys and staff, and spearheaded policy and training initiatives across multiple stakeholder groups in the criminal justice system. His work included developing and delivering training presentations to law enforcement agencies, leadership teams, and nonprofit partners helping build bridges between systems, improving investigative protocols, and promoting ethical, accountable investigative and prosecution practices. Accumulating over 20 years of experience as a criminal prosecutor, he has extensive trial experience managing complex, high-stakes cases requiring proof beyond a reasonable doubt—the highest burden in the American legal system. Mr. Cheney brings trial-tested experience, with a focus on risk analysis, litigation strategy, and efficient case resolution.

Mr. Cheney received his J.D. with honors from the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville. Mr. Cheney also holds an L.L.M. in agricultural law from the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville. Mr. Cheney is also a combat Army war veteran, having earned a Bronze Star for his service.

Outside of work, Mr. Cheney enjoys “being outside” in nature.
