Have you ever wondered what the life of a lawyer is like? Here is a peek behind the curtain. I am an Associate for Tyson & Mendes (T&M), and I am very excited about my work and the opportunity to share some of the details of what it is like to work for the amazing T&M team!
The first thing I do when I log in is fill out my T&M caseload survey. Then I look at my Outlook calendar to see what is going on for the day. If there is a hearing that day or a deadline to complete, then more likely than not, I prepared myself for it the day before. This is why the calendar is vital for me: Thanks to our amazing T&M support staff, the calendar ensures I have all the right links and/or attachments I need for these events.
When it gets later in the morning, I pour some coffee into a disposable cup or a coffee cup with the T&M brand for a boost of energy. Then I set my goals for completing assignments. I also check in with Branch Managing Partner David Frankenberger and follow up with Team Leader Sara Woods.
During the afternoon on Mondays, I have a team meeting with other associate attorneys, paralegals, and legal assistants to see what is on the horizon for the next two weeks. We have great communication, and I really appreciate getting up to speed with them. Most Tuesdays, we have a branch office meeting at the same time to review upcoming deadlines and hearings for the next two weeks (called “Donuts with Dave”). I also look at whether there are any firm Zoom events. In addition, we might have a local event, either with a bar association or a medical expert organization.
At the end of every day, I look at my billables to ensure I fulfilled my quota for the day. If I do not feel comfortable with my quota, I will work on Sunday for a bit, or Saturday if time permits.
By the end of the week, I make sure to go into Branch Managing Partner David Frankenberger’s office to see what I can do to help the caseload. Communication with clients is the key. Therefore, communication with each other is also imperative. I also make sure to update Team Leader Sara Woods on cases that she is directly supervising.
Although my week can vary depending on the specific needs of a case, this is a relatively accurate portrait of the average week with me. I am so grateful to get to work with such a wonderful, communicative, and helpful team.
