NEW YORK (May 28, 2020) Leading civil defense firm Tyson & Mendes LLP announced Mike Coffey as a new partner in its New York office, which handles litigation throughout the Tri-State area of New Jersey, New York, and Connecticut, as part of the growing firm’s Complex Trial Team.

With extensive trial experience, Coffey has taken over 125 matters to trial during his career. He has particular expertise in the areas of New York Labor Law and the healthcare industry, having been retained by companies and global insurance carriers from around the U.S., Canada, Ireland, Bermuda, and the U.K. Coffey has experience representing managing general agencies, third party administrators, captives and corporations both directly and under self-insured retentions. He also represents clients in all lines of business, including casualty, errors and omissions, directors’ and officers’ liability, and property matters.

As a member of Tyson & Mendes’ Complex Trial Team, Coffey is regularly “parachuted in” by corporations and excess insurance companies shortly before trial to triage large exposure matters.

Coffey has a long track record of courtroom success, starting with his time as a young Assistant District Attorney under the legendary District Attorney Joe Hynes. He went on to become a trial attorney for National Grange Mutual before further honing his skills at two other national insurance defense firms. Prior to joining Tyson & Mendes, Coffey was a Partner at Wilson Elser and served as the founding and managing partner in the New York office of Wood, Smith, Henning & Berman LLP.

“Mike’s impressive background speaks for itself,” said Tyson & Mendes Managing Partner Robert Tyson. “He is a tried and true active trial attorney and we are thrilled to welcome him to our expanding presence on the East Coast.”

Coffey received his Juris Doctor from St. John’s University School of Law in 1994. He is affiliated with a number of organizations, such as the American Board of Trial Advocates, ABOTA. He has served two terms as City Council President and three terms as Fire Commissioner for the City of Norwalk, Connecticut. He was named to the 2015 Irish Legal 100 that recognized the 100 Most Distinguished Legal Professionals in the United States by the Irish Voice newspaper. Additionally, Coffey is often called upon to lead lectures and trainings on trial matters, best practices in claims handling, and New York labor law matters.
