Kevin Place is a Partner at Tyson & Mendes’ Los Angeles office, where he leads the Complex Trial Team. Mr. Place is a member of the American Board of Trial Advocates (ABOTA). He handles a complex insurance defense practice and has taken in excess of 20 cases to jury trial. He has practiced exclusively as an insurance defense attorney, specializing in wrongful death, vehicle accidents, construction accidents, premises liability, toxic torts, habitability claims, unfair business practices, and products liability. Mr. Place’s first six years of practice were spent as a trial attorney with Nationwide Insurance Company’s Trial Division. He was also a managing attorney for Liberty Mutual Insurance Company’s staff counsel and a Partner with Archer Norris for 11 years.
Mr. Place’s singular focus during his law career has been to provide the best defense to the individual and business clients he represents. Mr. Place recently chaired a toxic tort trial in which plaintiff asked for $23 million. The jury rendered a defense verdict, determining three companies were not liable for a boy’s birth defects after his mother claimed she was exposed to pesticides. His jury trial experience also includes obtaining a defense verdict on behalf of a stucco manufacturer in an asbestos exposure case, a defense verdict on behalf of an Orange County engineering firm in a wrongful termination case, a defense verdict in a products liability case where plaintiff requested $36 million in damages for causing complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), and defense verdicts on two premises liability cases on behalf of Smart & Final and Denny’s. Mr. Place successfully obtained a favorable Motion for Summary Judgment resulting in the dismissal of a case where plaintiff alleged exposure to benzene caused him to develop myelogenous leukemia.
After graduating high school, Mr. Place attended the United States Air Force Academy for one year, where he played football. He went on to complete his undergraduate studies at U.C. Irvine in 1988. In 1993, Kevin received his J.D. from Western State College of Law in Fullerton, California. Over the years, Kevin has been a member of the Los Angeles County Bar Association, Riverside County Bar Association, and the Japanese American Bar Association.
Outside the practice of law, Kevin enjoys spending time with his wife and two sons (honestly). He is an avid reader of mystery novels (favorites are Michael Connolly and James Ellroy) and a big fan of MMA and boxing. Kevin has coached Pop Warner football and AYSO soccer teams, and presently supports a local high school chapter of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
